With the sun shining, the first 60-minute free practice session of the weekend for the 2018 Michelin Le Mans Cup in Austria saw the reigning team champions DKR Engineering top the time sheets.
Championship leader Leonard Hoogenboom posted a 1m26.841 lap around the 4.318km Red Bull Ring to head the 26 strong field and 0.590s ahead of Road to Le Mans winner Duncan Tappy in the no25 Lanan Racing Norma-Nissan. Fellow Briton Colin Noble posted the third fastest time in the no79 Ecurie Ecosse/ Nielsen Ligier, 0.678s behind Hoogenboom’s time and less than a tenth behind Tappy.
The GT3 category was topped by the no8 Kessel Racing Ferrari F488 of Giacomo Piccini, the championship leader finishing the 60-minute session with a 1m29.917 lap, just 0.2s ahead of the no35 Krypton Motorsport Mercedes AMG GT3 of Stefano Pezzucchi. The no77 Kessel Racing Ferrari was third fastest with Andrea Piccini finishing the session just 0.064s behind the Mercedes and 0.348s behind his brother.
The second Free Practice session will take place later today, Friday 20 July, at 16h20.
