In the GT3 category it was the no35 Krypton Motorsport Mercedes AMG GT3 that held the upperhand for the 15-minute session as Stefano Pezzucchi posted fastest lap after fastest lap to finish 1.1 seconds ahead of the rest of the field at the chequered flag. The Italian drivers run wasn’t without incident as he went off into the gravel on the penultimate lap, only to bounce back with a 1m27.730, the lap that claimed the pole position on the Italian team’s Michelin Le Mans Cup debut.
Current championship leader Sergio Pianezzola was second fastest in the no8 Kessel Racing Ferrari and will line up alongside the no35 Mercedes this afternoon.
In the LMP3 category the no30 CD Sport Norma-Nissan of Fabien Lavergne dominated the proceedings but finished just 0.054s ahead of the no3 DKR Engineering after championship leader Jens Petersen put in a flying lap at the chequered flag to move up the order from 5th place to start the race on the front row.
Petersen’s lap pushed Adrien Chila’s no40 Graff Norma-Nissan onto the second row, just ahead of the two Ecurie Ecosse / Nielsen Ligiers, with the no79 car of Alasdair McCaig just 0.03 ahead of teammate Tony Wells. The top seven cars in the LMP3 category were split by less than one second, setting up a dramatic race around the 4.3km Red Bull Ring for the fourth of the 2018 Michelin Le Mans Cup.
