The Belgian driver is no stranger to taking championship silverware home having secured the 2007 and 2008 GT4 European Cup and the 2016 Group C Racing Series Class 1 titles.
Last season De Doncker and Henrion secured their first of two wins at Spa-Francorchamps, taking the LMP3 Pro/Am crown with victory at Portimão at the end of the season. Holding a 12-point advantage in the championship standings this year, Eric De Doncker will be looking to take a third win in a row to extend their lead even further on Saturday afternoon in front of his home crowd.
Q: Two wins from three races, including victory at Le Mans, has put you and Gillian at the top of the championship standings in defence of your 2025 title? How would you sum up the season so far and is there anything you are working to improve for the second half of the season?
Eric De Doncker: “Except Barcelona race, we did a good job so far, I am very proud of my team for the win at Le Mans, this win is one of my best racing achievements so far, as a driver and team owner.
“For the second half of the season, we will continue to work hard to prepare the car the best we can, then, racing is racing, so we never know what can happen.”
Q: This is your second season racing with Gillian Henrion. Tell us a bit more about your young teammate.
EDD: “Gillian is a very nice kid, very talented, fast and safe. He deserves to race in LMP2 or Hypercar. We are working on it, but we need to find some partners to help.”
Q: The next race is your home event at Spa-Francorchamps. What is it that makes Spa a favourite for almost every driver that races there and what makes it special for you personally?
EDD: “Spa is a fabulous circuit, the atmosphere is always special, as the weather. Racing in front of the Belgian fans is always special, even if it puts a bit more pressure on the team.”
Q: Do you have a favourite corner or sequence?
EDD: “I like the “double gauche”, and the Raidillon is still one the most challenging corner… at least for me.”
Q: Looking at the championship title race, what would you consider to be a good result at Spa?
EDD: “The target is the podium, but the most important for us is to cross the finish line and score good points.”
Q: Is there a story behind the Motorsport98 team name?
EDD: “I have always owned classic Ford road cars, including a Ford GT40 and a Shelby Cobra, and also raced different Fords, both classic and modern. When I started my team a few years ago, I named it Motorsport98 in tribute to Ken Miles, who raced a Shelby Cobra with the number 98.”
Q: Tell us a bit more about Eric De Doncker. What do you like to do when you are not racing? Do you play any sports or have any hobbies?
EDD: “I am a professional golfer, so I play a lot of golf, I love cars, I like to drive my cars and share this passion with the cars lovers, I am managing the team with my wife and my loyal staff.”
Round 4 of the 2026 Michelin Le Mans Cup will take place at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on Saturday 22 August.
