In qualifying for Round 5 of the 2016 Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup the no72 SMP Racing Ferrari 488 of Alexsey Basov took pole position with a 2m19.785 lap around the 7km Spa-Francorchamps circuit. This was Basov’s third pole position in a row and extends his, and teammate Victor Shaitar, lead in the Drivers’ Championship by one point.
The Russian’s time was 0.4 seconds faster than the no55 FFF Racing Team by ACM McLaren driven by Hiroshi Hamaguchi. The Japanese driver set a 2m20.236 lap on his first ever visit to Spa-Francorchamps and this pushed the local Belgian team Autoclub Excelsior into third place. Michael Schmetz held provisional pole position in the no90 Aston Martin Vantage for part of the session but his time of 2m20.393 put him on row two for the start of this afternoons’ 2-hour race when the chequered flag was shown to end the 15 minute Superpole session.
Team Championship leaders TF Sport will start on the third row after Salih Yoluc posted a 2m22.267 lap, 1.407s behind the no88 Mentos Racing Porsche of Egidio Perfetti, who will start the race on row two alongside the no90 Aston Martin.
Round 5 of the 2016 Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup will start later today at 17h30.
