The High Profile Challenge

LMC - 02/02/2018 - Jeff CARTER

The 2018 Michelin Le Mans Cup will race on six of Europe’s most challenging and high profile tracks, four current Formula One circuits and, most importantly, the grand daddy of them all, the full 13.6km La Sarthe circuit at Le Mans in June.

The Michelin Le Mans Cup will begin in April with a 2-hour race at Le Castellet, the new home of the French Grand Prix. The 5.8km Circuit Paul Ricard will host the opening race of the season, as well as the pre-season test the day before.

Race 2 is at Monza, the home of the Italian Grand Prix.  The Michelin Le Mans Cup will return to Italy in May and compete on the fastest circuit on the calendar. The 5.796km track features long straights and fast flowing corners, the perfect place to practice for Le Mans.

The next round on the calendar is two 55-minute races on the full La Sarthe circuit ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.  This is the jewel in the crown for the series and for many drivers on the grid it will be their first opportunity to showcase their talents on the full 13.6km track in front of tens of thousands of fans.

The Michelin Le Mans Cup then travels to the Red Bull Ring near Spielberg in Austria, the home of the Austrian Grand Prix.  The 4.326km circuit is set in the foothills of the Sytrian Alps and has to be the most picturesque circuit on the 2018 calendar.

Next is the 2-hour encounter at Spa-Francorchamps one month after the Belgian Grand Prix.  The 7.004km circuit is the longest on the 2018 calendar and Eau Rouge, Stavelot and Les Combes are renowned around the world.  It is no wonder that Spa-Francorchamps is one of the most popular tracks on any driver’s top three circuits list.

The final circuit on the 2018 Michelin Le Mans Cup calendar is Portimão which has a layout that is more akin to a roller coaster.  The 5.796km circuit is highly technical with short straights, fast and slow corners and big changes in elevation; it is the perfect place to hold the season finale.
