Championship Leaders Claim Pole at Spa-Francorchamps

LMC - 21/09/2019 - Jeff CARTER

The no3 DKR Engineering Norma-Nissan of Francois Kirmann took the pole position and the extra point to extend their championship lead ahead of this afternoon’s Round 5 of the 2019 Michelin Le Mans Cup.

Kirmann’s best lap of 2m14.628 was set at the chequered flag but the French driver had dominated the 15-minute session going ahead of the no25 Lanan Racing Norma of Michael Benham early on.  Benham kept the pressure on, along with the two Graff cars, the no9 Norma driven by Eric Trouillet and the no39 Norma driven by Adrien Chila.

Benham took the chequered flag in second place only to be knocked down to fourth for this afternoon’s race as the no3 Norma took the front row position alongside Kirmann, with Chila heading up row 2.

Lavergne Claims Third GT3 Pole of 2019 Season

Fabien Lavergne took his third pole position of the 2019 Michelin Le Man Cup in a red flag interrupted qualifying session at Spa-Francorchamps.  The no88 Ebimotors Porsche stopped at T15 and the marshals unable to move the car from the dangerous position so the session was neutralised to get the car into a safe position.

At the restart, with less than six minutes of the 15-minute session remaining Lavergne posted a 2m18.275 lap in the no71 Luzich Racing Ferrari to go well ahead of the no8 Kessel Racing 488 GT3 of Sergio Pianezzola.  However, the French driver’s lap was deleted for going beyond track limits.  Pianezzola then posted a 2m19.012 to go into provisional pole position just before the chequered flag.

With both cars on their last lap Lavergne put in the best sector times in sector 1 and sector 2 and crossed the line in 2m17.902 to claim pole.  Pianezzola also went quicker but was only able to lap the 7km track in 2m18.836.

The no35 Krypton Motorsport Mercedes of Stefano Pezzucchi was third fastest with a 2m20.189 lap, nearly one second ahead of Andrew Howard in the no99 Beechdean AMR Aston Martin.

François Kirmann: “We saw in Barcelona that Adrien Chila was improving every lap in qualifying so the goal was to keep improving here until the last lap.  We have a lot of chances for this afternoon’s race, the weather is just perfect and the car prepared by DKR is just perfect.  Every championship point is important, so this one is too, but the race is the most important; we have 25 points to gain.”

Fabien Lavergne: “The red flag came at the wrong moment because the tyres were starting to work well, and I had to back off.  I had to focus again; one lap got deleted so I had to push again on the last lap but the car was amazing.  Every point is important in this championship, so I am happy with that.  But that is just a small part of the job done and we have to win this one and go to Portimão with more points.”
