Portimão: Winners and champions reactions

LMC - 30/10/2019 - Sophie LIGER

Sergio Pianezzola – n°8 Kessel Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 (2019 GT3 champions and Portimão race winners): “It was a hard race for us because first with had a small issue with the fuel yesterday and we had to start from the last row and we of course did not expected that. I managed to do a really good start, after the first corner I saw a nice place to go through and at the end of the first lap I was in first position but also because the Ferrari n°71 of Lavergne had a contact.  It was a fantastic season.”

Giacomo Piccini – n°8 Kessel Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 (2019 GT3 champions and Portimão race winners): “Until the contact with an LMP3 car everything was going well, Sergio did an amazing first part of the race. I was leading, the car was good, everything was ok and then I let an LMP3 car past. I think he lost the car and he hit me. After that the car became difficult to drive and Ross Gunn (n°99 Beechdean AMR) managed to come closer, but I had everything under control. The goal was to get the entry for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and we got it, so we are all very happy.”

François Kirmann – n°3 DKR Engineering Norma M30 (2019 LMP3 Champions): “It’s crazy for me because my first time in an LMP3 was 10 months ago and everything passed really quickly. Now we are champions and I could not have guessed at the beginning of the season that we will end the year as champions. It was a crazy season. I made a mistake at the beginning of the race, I spun and then I think I lost around 20s during the fight with Michael Benham. All the team did an amazing job and the car was perfect, so they deserve this win.”

Laurents Hörr - n°3 DKR Engineering Norma M3° (2019 LMP3 Champions): “During my incident with Duncan Tappy I just went fully inside as there was a gap and then he pulled me to the left of the track, I was able to keep the position. At the next corner I was defending my position and he just went into my back. They had a penalty; I think it was fair even if it’s a bit unfortunate to end the season like that. But we are champions now and that is all that matters. I’m really happy as I achieved another goal, I really can’t complain about anything, it’s nice to end the season with the championship win.”

Rob Wheldon – n°15 RLR MSport Ligier JS P3 (LMP3 winner of the Portimão round): “It was a physical start; it was not brilliant, but I managed to get to the second place early on. I expected to have a little bit more pace that I did but I could not close down on the lead DKR car. When the full course yellow came out we got a chance with the traffic to put some pressure on. François (Kirmann) did a little mistake at T14 so I benefit from that and managed to create the gap to give the car back to Alex (Kapadia).  It’s fantastic to be on the first step of the podium for my first race in the championship, I could not have asked for more. We came here thinking we had a good pair; this is my first time in an LMP3 car, so I had to learn a lot this weekend and I enjoyed every minute. I would like to thank the team for giving me this opportunity.”

Alex Kapadia – n°15 RLR MSport Ligier JS P3 (LMP3 winner of the Portimão round): “It’s amazing! Rob did an amazing job at the beginning of the race. My job was really to stay in front of the other guys, the Normas were really quick this weekend. The grid was super competitive, I think Rob was a little bit shocked to see how tough it is. We race together for years in several championships but when he came here he really saw how hard it is in Michelin Le Mans Cup and our strategy was flat out all the way through.”
