Motorsport 98 will once again favour the Michelin Le Mans Cup in 2020

LM P3 - 13/11/2019 - Press release - Motorsport98

Similar to a fair number of international competitions, the Michelin Le Mans Cup organised within the European Le Mans Series meetings, handed down its verdict during the final round at Portimao

For the Belgian Motorsport 98 team of Eric De Doncker, this season was a special case, a shoulder wound having prevented the driver-owner from competing prior to the Barcelona round. Which meant that the orange and black Ligier JS P3 was conspicuous by its absence at Paul Ricard, at Monza, as also during the ‘Road To Le Mans’ in La Sarthe. As such Motorsport 98 only put in three appearances out of seven meetings … which did not prevent the team and its drivers from claiming two splendid top 5 results in the championship’s final rankings!

Together with Dino Lunardi, we only competed in the Barcelona, Spa and Portimao rounds, Eric De Doncker confirmed. And the results were there. We finished fifth in Catalonia, then 2nd following the elimination of various Norma at Francorchamps, prior to rounding off the season at the foot of the podium with a 4th place in Portugal. Pretty cool for such a skimpy programme. All the more so seeing we finished the year in the top 5 overall; both in the Teams and Drivers rankings… On top of which the best representative of the Ligier make. What else?

All in all, Eric de Doncker enjoyed the opportunity to build on his experience and speed at the wheel of the Ligier JS P3….” Taking into account Dino’s professional activities I had the pleasure of going into attack each racing weekend with a view to sorting out the Ligier’s set-up, Eric continued. And I can state that I reached a new step, with improved times as compared to 2018. When Lunardi arrives we split the work, and the understanding between us is always perfect. Dino undoubtedly missed out on a great career, because he is an extremely fast driver which allows me to forge ahead, and also to progress. As a true ‘Bronze’ driver my top speed is one of the key points of our performances, and everything went really well during this second part of the season.”

Taking full pleasure of the Michelin Le Mans Cup atmosphere Eric De Doncker and his Motorsport 98 structure will tackle the 2020 season at the same level. “Obviously hoping to be able to compete in the full season that this time around, a smiling Eric commented. In this discipline the focus is on Bronze drivers, which encourages me to continue in this light. We are satisfied of our relations with Ligier, and next season we will have the new version at our disposal, the JS P320. All the elements are in place to take on a promising new season. If the results are of the same level as those we produced in the three races we competed in this year, an overall podium is feasible! For the rest I’m truly proud of my team and the work accomplished in 2019. Not a single worry, not a single mistake, it was just perfect. Roll on the launch of the 2020 championship, which will kick-off at the beginning of April with collective tests in Barcelona, before the first race which all also be held there, followed by the rounds in Monza, Le Mans, Le Castellet, Spa and Portimao… “
