The Swede was 0.115s ahead of the nearest rival in the red flag interrupted session and was over 1.3 seconds quicker than the 2018 pole position time.
Michael Benham was the quickest driver in the no25 Lanan Racing Norma and the round 1 winner looked to be heading for the pole position slot when a red flag was brought out after the no11 Racing Experience Norma of Charlie Martin went off at T3, spreading debris across the track with five minutes 30 seconds on the clock. Martin recovered the Norma back to the pits.
At the restart it was a mad dash to complete the final laps and Benham found himself pushed down to row 2 after Joakim Frid went quickest and Tony Wells put the no2 Nielsen Racing Norma on the front row alongside the no43 KEO Racing Ligier with a 1m46.806 lap.
Reigning Michelin Le Mans Cup GT3 Drivers Champion Sergio Pianezzola took his first pole position of the 2019 season at Monza by the narrowest of margins. The Italian lapped Monza in the no8 Kessel Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 in 1m49.109, just 0.003 seconds ahead of Fabien Lavergne in the no71 Luzich Racing Ferrari.
The battle for the class pole raged for the entire 15 minutes session with the no35 Krypton Motorsport Mercedes AMG GT3 of Stefano Pezzucchi making the early pace before Lavergne took the provisional pole.
With three minutes remaining Pianezzola posted his fastest lap, pushing Lavergne down into second place. The French driver made a last lap effort to take his second pole position of the season, but at the chequered flag the lap was three thousandths of a second behind the lead Ferrari.
Round 2 of the 2019 Michelin Le Mans Cup at Monza will take place today at 16h00 (CET).
