The Michelin Le Mans Cup and Monza

LMC - 07/05/2020 - Sophie LIGER

This week, we should have been racing in Monza for the fourth time in a row. To help you to pass the time before the 2020 season gets underway, let’s have a look back at the first three editions of the Monza round.

Since 2017, the Michelin Le Mans Cup has held its Italian round at the Temple of Speed, the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. This track is full of history and is one of the favourites of the teams and drivers who like its speed and its challenging corners. Monza is also one of the narrowest tracks of the calendar, which adds a further challenge into the mix!

The track seems to suit well to Norma and Ferrari, the two manufacturers having both won two out of the three races.

Norma has won the LMP3 class twice. In 2018 with the n°3 DKR Engineering driven by Leonard Hoogenboom and Jens Petersen, who were crowned Michelin Le Mans Cup champions at the end of that season. In 2019, it was the n°25 Norma of Lanan Racing of Michael Benham and Duncan Tappy that took the honours at the Temple of Speed.

Ligier has one victory to its credit and it was in 2017 for the first event of the Michelin Le Mans Cup in Monza. The French manufacturer took the chequered flag first with the n° 79 Nielsen Racing Ligier JS P3 – Nissan, with Colin Noble and Anthony Wells at the wheel.

In the GT3 class, Ferrari has taken two wins out of three, in 2018 and 2019.

The first edition of the Monza round was won by the n°7 Lee Mowle Mercedes AMG GT3 of Lee Mowle and Phil Keen.

In 2018, Ferrari was back at the front on home turf with the victory going to two times LMC champions Kessel Racing and the n°8 Ferrari 488 GT3 of Andrea Pizzitola and Giacomo Piccini.

The following year, Ferrari took a second victory in a row at the Temple of Speed with the n°71 Luzich Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 of Fabien Lavergne and Mikkel Mac.

Who will win the fourth edition of the Monza Round? We will have to wait a little bit longer to discover it.
