GT3: What is the Balance of Performance?

GT3 - 07/04/2019 - Jeff CARTER

For a class such as GT3 where a wide variety of car types are homologated the performance of each car must be balanced to prevent a single manufacturer from becoming dominant. GT3 cars must be based on production road car models and each have different engine sizes and chassis construction.

The Michelin Le Mans Cup Committee issues Balance of Performance adjustments which affect, amongst other things, the limit on horsepower and weight to bring the performance of each model in line with the others competing in the series.

The Michelin Le Mans Cup Committee ensures that the solutions proposed can be applied by the competitors in a timely fashion in relation to the calendar.

Adjustments to performance may be applied by the Michelin Le Mans Cup Committee at any moment of the 2019 season between the events. Once an event has begun the Balance of Performance is fixed and can’t be modified. However, the Committee has the right to adjust the performance of an entrant during an event if they are a race by race entry and not a full season entry.

The Committee has the right to ask the constructors and competitors to confidentially provide any necessary information to improve the Balance of Performance.

For the start of 2019 Michelin Le Mans Cup there are five manufacturers – Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes and Porsche entered in the GT3 category.  In preparation for the first race of the season at Le Castellet on Saturday 13 April, the Michelin Le Mans Cup Committee has issued the first BoP which details:

  1. Weight of the Car (Kg)
  2. Engine air restrictor size in the case of the Lamborghini, Mercedes and Porsche
  3. Turbo Boost Ratio in the case of Aston Martin and Ferrari

Each of these details can be adjusted between each of the events based on the performance of the car in the previous competition.
