By the Numbers: GT3 Champions

GT3 - 15/02/2019 - Jeff CARTER

With the start of the 2019 Michelin Le Mans Cup season just two months away we take a look back at last season for the 2018 GT3 champion, the no8 Kessel Racing Ferrari F488 GT3, with drivers Giacomo Piccini and Sergio Pianezzola.

The 2018 Season

Seasoned GT racer Giacomo Piccini was joined by fellow Italian Sergio Pianezzola for the 2018 season.  It was Pianezzola’s debut season in circuit racing but the Italian had competed as a rally driver prior to his switch to the Michelin Le Mans Cup.

The Italian duo dominated the class with six podiums, including five wins, and Sergio Pianezzola claiming four pole positions from seven attempts. Unsurprisingly Piccini was the faster of the two drivers but as the season progressed Pianezzola closed the gap and his fastest race lap in Portimão was just four tenths of a second slower than his teammates best lap.

The only disappointment for the Kessel Racing team was the second race at Le Mans. After starting from pole position Pianezzola got caught up in a three car collision on the opening lap, forcing the Italian into retirement. This was in stark contrast to race one two days earlier on the full La Sarthe track where the Italian duo went from the back of the grid to take the chequered flag.

The no8 Kessel Racing Ferrari ended the season on 138 points, 55 points ahead of their nearest rivals.  A truly dominant season and one that claimed the Kessel Racing team a coveted automatic invitation to the 2019 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMGTE Am class.
