Championship Contenders Fill Front Row of the Grid for Season Finale in Portugal

LMC - 26/10/2019 - Jeff CARTER

After two exciting qualifying sessions, the LMP3 front row will be filled by the contenders challenging for the titles in tomorrow's final race of the 2019 Michelin Le Mans Cup.

The no3 DKR Engineering Norma M30-Nissan driven by Francois Kirmann will start from pole position for the fourth time this season and the extra point has closed the gap to just six points to the championship leading no25 Lanan Racing Norma of Michael Benham and Duncan Tappy.

Kirmann’s time of 1m40.560 was 0.465s ahead of the rest of the 18 strong grid, with the no25 Norma of Michael Benham starting on the front row for tomorrow morning’s championship showdown.

Third fastest was the no14 RLR M Sport Ligier, with Rob Wheldon finishing the session just 0.023s behind Benham on his Michelin Le Mans Cup debut.  The no5 DKR Engineering Norma of Wolfgang Triller was fourth.

Also for the fourth time in 2019 the no71 Luzich Racing Ferrari will start from pole position in the GT3 category after Fabien Lavergne finished the session 0.7 seconds ahead of the rest of the field led by the no8 Kessel Racing Ferrari of Sergio Pianezzola.  The French driver set a time of 1m43.546 on his second flying lap.  Pianezzola closed the gap to one tenth of a second but had the lap deleted for exceeding the track limits at T16.

The no88 Ebimotors Porsche of Alessandro Baccani was third quickest in the 15-minute session, the Italian finishing 1.598s behind the rapid Ferrari on pole.

However, in post qualifying scrutineering the mandatory fuel that the no8 Ferrari was using was found to have traces of a different fuel at a concentration around 1.4%, which is a breach of article 7.3.1 of the 2019 Michelin Le Mans Cup Regulations.

The no8 Kessel Racing Ferrari was disqualified from the GT3 qualifying session (Steward’s Decision no11) and will start the final race of the 2019 season from the back of the grid.

The extra point for Luzich Racing means the gap to the no8 Kessel Racing Ferrari is now just 8 points ahead of tomorrow’s final two-hour race of the season.

Round 6 of the 2019 Michelin Le Mans Cup in Portimão will take at 09h00 tomorrow morning.
