Big Grid for New Spanish Event

After three rounds in France and Italy, the Michelin Le Mans Cup enters the second half of the 2019 season with a brand new venue for the series, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

After the thrills and spills of two 55-minute races on the full 13.6km La Sarthe circuit at Le Mans last month, the Michelin Le Mans Cup will return to the 2-hour race format for the rest of the season and 29 cars will compete in Spain for class honours on Saturday 20 July.

As Barcelona is a brand new circuit on the calendar there will be limited track data available for the teams and drivers to rely on. This should provide plenty of action during practice and qualifying as the teams work hard to find the best set up for their cars and the drivers find their limits. 

 

LMP3: Will Lanan Racing stay in front?

The LMP3 category is once again filled by 20 entries split between French chassis manufacturers Ligier and Norma. 

Spanish interest for the race in Barcelona will centre on the front running no30 CD Sport of French duo Kevin Bole-Besançon and Jacques Wolff.  The Spanish outfit will be hoping for change in luck for their home race after challenging hard at the front end of the highly competitive LMP3 field. The results have not gone their way, with a best finish of only 7th place so far, something the team hope to change on home turf.

In Le Castellet and Monza, victory went to Duncan Tappy and Michael Benham in the all British Lanan Racing teams Norma-Nissan and with a podium finish from pole at Le Mans they are currently leading the championship by 8 points. 

2018 Champions DKR Engineering from Luxembourg have entered two Norma M30s for the 2019 season and the no3 car of François Kirmann and Laurents Hörr are currently second in the points thanks to victory in Race 2 at Le Mans and two second place finishes in Le Castellet and Monza.

After scoring three podiums from four races, the no2 Nielsen Racing Norma of British duo Colin Noble and Tony Wells are chasing the leading cars hard, just 23 points behind the no25 Lanan Racing Norma as the season enters the second half.

 

GT3: Who will beat Luzich Racing?

The 9 car GT3 grid will feature four different manufacturers with Aston Martin, Ferrari, Mercedes and Porsche all represented in Barcelona. 

Three wins from the first four races has given the no71 Luzich Racing Ferrari of Mikkel Mac and Fabien Lavergne a 17 point lead. A double victory at Le Mans saw the Franco-Danish driver pairing enjoy the view from the top step of the podium in front of tens of thousands of fans. 

2018 champions Sergio Pianezzola and Giacomo Piccini got the defence of their 2018 title off to the best start by taking victory at Le Castellet and are currently in second place in the title race.

The no51 Spirit of Race Ferrari of Christoph Ulrich and Maurizio Mediani finished second in the opening race of the Road to Le Mans weekend and 2017 ELMS LMGTE Champions Beechdean AMR had the best result of their debut MLMC season with a second place finish for Andrew Howard and Ross Gunn in the second race on Saturday morning.

With a grid of 29 cars entered for the race in Barcelona, the Michelin Le Mans Cup race will be one of the highlights of a great weekend of racing.
